To prepare using brand new pocket diapers, we recommend just giving them one wash like you would normal clothing. We also recommend line dry/hang dry for pocket diapers to preserve the elastics/PUL and increase their overall longevity.
Pocket diapers come with a pocket where you can insert absorbent inserts. Depending on the absorbency you need, you can use one or more inserts. Make sure to position the insert(s) properly inside the pocket to not allow the insert to fold and leave spaces for liquid to get on the PUL. You want the insert to remain as flat in the pocket as possible. In our pocket diapers, we actually have a snap in the front of the pocket and a snap on our inserts that allow you to snap them inside and pull the diaper up as needed without the insert moving around!
Another feature on pocket diapers, they come with adjustable snaps that allow you to adjust the diaper's size and fit. Make sure to adjust the diaper to your baby's size and weight for a comfortable and secure fit. You want to be able to have about two fingers stacked between the baby and the tummy panel of the diaper. This ensures it's not too tight! Around the legs, you'll want to make sure there is not gapping and that it isn't too tight, leaving harsh red marks. When it's time to change the diaper, take off soiled diaper, replace with new diaper, remove the absorbent insert(s) and dispose of any solid waste in the toilet. Store the used diaper in an open laundry basket with holes all around (preferred method to allow air flow to reduce odors), a diaper pail or a wet bag until you're ready to wash them. We recommend washing as necessary to avoid mold, bugs, etc OR about every 3-5 days.Pocket diapers tend to be a favorite diapering style for those who have other caregivers who will watch their child and could benefit from the ease of no extra fasteners or folding.
